MAORI ART MARKet 2009 was held at Pataka Museum of arts and cultures and the Te Rauparaha Arena, both in Porirua City, Wellington. It was the biggest of the shows and the largest exhibtion of contemporary Maori art ever exhibited.

It was a gathering of a hand picked group of 200 leading, mid career and emerging contemporary artists showing their work for sale over the three-day period from the 9 to 11 October 2009. 2007 was essentially the first MAORI ART MARKet in New Zealand. Held in the heart of Wellington City, it showcased and celebrated Maori art and culture, achievement, enterprise and creativity.

2005 – Māori Art Meets America, San Francisco

While not billed as a MAORI ART MARKet, “Maori Art Meets America” and the “Eternal Thread” exhibition were an integral part of the establishing of MAORI ART MARKet. Held in San Francisco in 2005, the exhibition was hugely successful. 'Toi Maori, The Eternal Thread' exhibition of traditional and contemporary weaving toured to the USA (2004-2006); and the highly significant 'Kiwa - Pacific Connections' (2003) and 'Manawa - Pacific Heartbeat' (2006) exhibitions were held at the Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver, Canada.

That exhibition has since become history with the sailing of a Maori war canoe under the Golden Gate Bridge and the dawn ceremony launch of Maori art at the Yerba Buena Arts Centre in San Francisco. Americans asked where they could purchase the art in New Zealand and that gave rise to MAORI MARKet at the ASB Arena in Wellington City in 2007.
