Karmen Thomson

Karmen Thomson began weaving in 1999 under the tutelage of acclaimed Te Arawa weaver Matekino Lawless.

Karmen's attention to detail and enjoyment of incorporating traditional and contemporary techniques has cemented her place as a celebrated weaver.

Karmen takes inspiration from the excellence achieved by our tupuna and as a teacher of raranga and whatu aims to instill that standard and sense of pride into hers and her students' work.

Her goal is to see the artform flourish and for traditional meeting houses around the country to once again be filled with stunning woven pieces.

" Part of who you are goes into your work, aroha and respect for the art form imbues each taonga with Mauri (life force) that will survive the ages."
