In Aotearoa there are exponential pressures and stigma around what it means to be male. Tane are expected to be strong, not show emotions or worse hide them behind a mask which has greatly affected their mental health and well-being.

While it took me a while to come around to the idea of doing a series of self-portraits, I felt like it was the best first approach as I wanted to explore and address my own journey with mental illness and identity before I progressed further with this kaupapa.
