Whakawhanaunga / Nurturing Relationships"Whakawhanaunga / Nurturing Relationships" In support of matauranga Māori birthing concepts, this installation explores ipu whenua - a receptacle made with the intention of burying the whenua or afterbirth of a newborn baby. The late Manos Nathan used the term waka taura here tangata for clay vessels for afterbirth created to help retain identity and connection to tribal homelands. Uku offers a wonderful material to assist in the revitalisation of customary practice that affirms and strengthens relationships between the newborn, the whanau (family) and their connection to whenua (land). Three unfired vessels, grouped together, approximately 25 x 25cm in dimension
